Experience the BEST sites of the famous K'gari Great Walk! 

Embark upon an amazing, fully supported, 3 day and 2 night hike, where you will experience the most remote areas of K'gari's Great Walk. Our rainforest hike guides you through lush tropical rainforest, where you will walk under some of the largest living trees on the island in the spectacular Valley of Giants. As you walk under forest giants from location to location, you will explore sights such as incredible sand blows, the 75 mile beach and stunning lakes -  Lake Garawongera and Lake McKenzie.

Itinerary

Walk under forest giants from location to location, while exploring sights such as incredible sand blows, 1000 year old trees in the Valley of the Giants and incredible freshwater creeks and lakes. 

  • Day 1

    Into the Valley of the Giants

       Walking Distance 10.5km 

    • Begin your adventure with a private 4WD transfer and barge journey to K'gari with your support guide. Leave your overnight bag with your guide and set out carrying just a light day pack with your walking essentials.
    • Begin walking from M9 on the K'gari Great Walk, following the trail through magnificent rainforest and lush subtropical landscapes towards the Valley of the Giants.
    • Along the way, there is the option of taking three additional side trails: Badjala Sandblow (1.2km return), with sweeping views across K'gari, the Giant Satinay tree walk (4.6k return) and the Giant Tallowood tree walk (2.6km return).
    • Arrive at the Valley of the Giants with camp already set up and relax with a complimentary drink and pre-dinner snacks before cooking your prepared dinner surrounded by the rainforest.

     Overnight camping at the Valley of the Giants

    Note: there is composting toilets and running water near the walkers camp but there are no showers.

  • Day 2

    Valley of the Giants to Lake Garawongera

       Walking Distance 13.1km 

    • Wake among the towering rainforest of the Valley of the Giants and enjoy breakfast before setting out for the day. 
    • Walk towards the tranquil, tea-tree-infused waters of Lake Garawongera (13.1km). Along the way, take the optional 1km side trail to historic Petrie’s Camp for a glimpse into K'gari’s past.
    • Arrive at Lake Garawongera with camp already set up and relax with a complimentary drink and pre-dinner snacks amongst the rainforest before cooking your prepared dinner and settling in for the evening.

      Meals: Breakfast, lunch & dinner

     Overnight camping at Lake Garawongera

    Note: there are composting toilets and limited running water (tour provides water) near the walkers' camp, but there are no showers—however, there is a lake!

  • Day 3

    Lake Garawongera to Lake McKenzie

       Walking Distance 10.6km 

    • Start your final day with a refreshing swim in Lake Garawongera before walking through to Happy Valley on K'gari's Eastern Beach (6.7km), where your support guide will meet you.
    • Travel south along 75 Mile Beach to Central Station for lunch, then walk through the magnificent rainforest of Pile Valley 2.8km). Your guide will transfer you to the final section of the trail, where you’ll walk into Lake McKenzie (1.1km) and its secluded hikers’ beach.
    • Relax on the white sand and enjoy a final swim in the pristine freshwater lake before your guide transfers you to Kingfisher Bay Resort. Unwind with a sunset drink overlooking the Great Sandy Strait before returning to Hervey Bay.
    • Meals: Breakfast & lunch
    • Tour concludes: Hervey Bay

  • Not included: Alcohol (other than 1 complimentary DRINK PER NIGHT provided), toiletries 
  • Hike departs from our office in Urangan, Hervey Bay, at approx 7am for the 4WD transfer to the Island
  • Pre-arranged pick-up available from hostels/ hotels in Urangan

Preparing you for a once in a lifetime experience

Please read the answers to the common questions we're asked below. Please don’t hesitate to get in touch for answers to any other questions you may have:

All hikes depart from Hervey Bay, 6 Southern Cross Circuit Urangan, near the airport.

Hikes can vary from 2 to 6 people. Private transfers require a minimum of 4 people and a levy may apply.

Average to Moderate fitness required for 2 and 3 day hikes and advanced experienced walking required for the 4 day hike. Please note that for adventure hikes, walkers must carry all their own equipment, so hiking experience is recommended.

Adventure hikers take a 70litre hiking pack with all equipment and food, they have a transfer to the trailhead and a pickup at the other end but no support during the hike. Pack-free hiking is a camping experience where you can enjoy camping in the wilderness but not have to carry the equipment or worry about the food as all this is done by the support guide.

Yes, especially with a support guide or a transfer as we know where our hikers are and have emergency plans in place should something happen. Hiking is not recommended for single walkers, therefore all our hikes always run with a minimum of 2.

There is an age limit of 12 years and over. Anyone under the age of 18 must be accompanied by a parent or guardian. There are no upper age restrictions for walkers with suitable ability, however walkers with medical conditions should check with the operator before booking.

The climate of K'gari is subtropical, with warm daytime temperatures throughout the entire year. The winter months are from May to August, where the average temperatures are 14-25 C (57-77 degrees F). Winter is the drier month of the year and it is less likely that you will see much rainfall during walking season. If it does rain it’s generally short showers.

Yes we can tailor make a hike for 2 to 6 people, this is a private charter where you would only have your group on the hike and no other groups. Please note this would be priced as a charter price, not per person and would vary depending on length etc.
