Have a real K'gari Eco Adventure and experience five of the islands most beautiful pristine freshwater lakes. Once you head off on your walk you’ll experience bliss in the wilderness, walk through spectacular towering rainforests and swim in freshwater blue lakes with sandy beaches.
This hike is fully supported with an on-the-ground guide who will transfer you in the 4wd to the trailhead and meeting points along the Great Walk track. While you are enjoying your pack-free hiking experience our guide will be setting up your camp and preparing your dinner - what more could you want!

Itinerary

Hike pack-free along K'gari’s southern section of the Great Walk. Experience five of K'gari's most beautiful pristine freshwater lakes on this Eco Hiking Adventure.

  • Day 1

    Dilli Village & Lake Boomanjin

       Walking Distance 13.5km 

    • Begin your adventure with an unforgettable experience! You will be transferred in a 4WD to the K’gari (Fraser Island) Great Walk trailhead at Dilli Village, the starting point for your hike.
    • Before setting off, you can leave your overnight bags with the support guide to be delivered to the first night's camp later in the day. This allows you to carry day packs with essentials like water, snacks, and rain jackets.
    • Start your hike with a 6.3km walk through spectacular forest to reach Lake Boomanjin. Enjoy the lake and have your packed lunch by the shore. After lunch, continue your hike for another 7.2km to Lake Benaroon, where the support guide welcomes you with a cheeseboard, cold beverages, camp setup, and a prepared dinner.

      Dinner options include fish teriyaki stir-fry or chicken pesto/tomato pasta. Dietary options available, menu subject to change.

     Overnight camping at Lake Benaroon

    Note: composting toilets available, no running water (water provided from tour), and no showers.

  • Day 2

    Central Station, Basin Lake & Lake McKenzie

        Walking Distance 14.1km

    • Wake up to the peaceful serenity of the bush, enjoy a light breakfast, and have a morning swim in the lake before starting the second day of your hike.
    • In the morning, hike 7.5km to Lake Birrabeen and continue to Central Station, where your support guide will provide a cooked lunch. After lunch, hike 6.6km to Lake McKenzie, passing through Basin Lake.
    • Upon reaching Lake McKenzie, your support guide will have your camp set up. Enjoy a peaceful afternoon swim, watch the sunset, and sip on a cold beer or a glass of wine while enjoying snacks and nibbles. Your guide will have dinner prepared for you to cook and enjoy under the stars around the camp table.

     Overnight camping at Lake McKenzie 

    Note: Composting toilets and running water available at Lake McKenzie hikers camp. No showers.

  • Day 3

    Lake Wabby & Eastern Beach

        Walking Distance 15.1km

    • Wake up to an early morning sunrise on the beautiful and famous Lake McKenzie. Start your day with a fresh swim and a quick breakfast before beginning the last day of your hike.
    • Your support guide will meet you before embarking on the 12km hike to Lake Wabby. When you arrive, enjoy a bush picnic lunch at the Lake Wabby lookout before descending down to the sand dune and the sparkling emerald lake.
    • Take a relaxing swim in Lake Wabby and enjoy the sand dunes before taking a short 2km walk to the Eastern Beach, where a 4WD transfer awaits. The 4WD will take you back to the Kingfisher Barge landing, where you can enjoy an afternoon drink, catch the sunset, and then board the barge at 5pm to return to Hervey Bay.

Preparing you for a once in a lifetime experience

Please read the answers to the common questions we're asked below. Please don’t hesitate to get in touch for answers to any other questions you may have:

All hikes depart from Hervey Bay, 6 Southern Cross Circuit Urangan, near the airport.

Hikes can vary from 2 to 6 people. Private transfers require a minimum of 4 people and a levy may apply.

Average to Moderate fitness required for 2 and 3 day hikes and advanced experienced walking required for the 4 day hike. Please note that for adventure hikes, walkers must carry all their own equipment, so hiking experience is recommended.

Adventure hikers take a 70litre hiking pack with all equipment and food, they have a transfer to the trailhead and a pickup at the other end but no support during the hike. Pack-free hiking is a camping experience where you can enjoy camping in the wilderness but not have to carry the equipment or worry about the food as all this is done by the support guide.

Yes, especially with a support guide or a transfer as we know where our hikers are and have emergency plans in place should something happen. Hiking is not recommended for single walkers, therefore all our hikes always run with a minimum of 2.

There is an age limit of 12 years and over. Anyone under the age of 18 must be accompanied by a parent or guardian. There are no upper age restrictions for walkers with suitable ability, however walkers with medical conditions should check with the operator before booking.

The climate of K'gari is subtropical, with warm daytime temperatures throughout the entire year. The winter months are from May to August, where the average temperatures are 14-25 C (57-77 degrees F). Winter is the drier month of the year and it is less likely that you will see much rainfall during walking season. If it does rain it’s generally short showers.

Yes we can tailor make a hike for 2 to 6 people, this is a private charter where you would only have your group on the hike and no other groups. Please note this would be priced as a charter price, not per person and would vary depending on length etc.
