It's the only K'gari Walking Tours hike that runs year-round, taking hikers through rainforest and past Lake Wabby for a swim in the famous white sands of Lake McKenzie.

This blog covers what to expect on each day of the Lake McKenzie Eco Walk, why it's such a popular pick, and what to bring along.

What Happens on Day One

Your adventure kicks off at the K'gari Walking Tours office in Urangan, where a private 4WD collects you for the barge crossing over to the island. From there, you're transferred to the M7 point to start your 10.7km walk for the day.

The first stretch takes you 3km into Lake McKenzie itself, where you'll stop for a packed lunch on the postcard-famous white-sand beach and enjoy a swim in the impossibly clear, cool, perched lake water. After lunch, it's on to Central Station, with a peaceful break at Basin Lake along the way.

By around 3.30pm, you'll arrive at Central Station walkers camp, where your tent is already set up and a cold drink and cheese platter are waiting. Dinner options include a fish teriyaki stir-fry or chicken pesto pasta, with dietary needs catered for.

What Happens on Day Two

Wake up surrounded by rainforest and enjoy a continental breakfast before setting off on a 5.2km walk through untouched, lush forest to meet your guide again at the M7 point.

From there, a 4WD transfer takes you to the Lake Wabby lookout for lunch, followed by a short 1km walk down to Lake Wabby, K'gari's deepest lake, and a genuinely stunning spot for a swim in emerald-green water.

The final leg is a 2.5km hike back over a huge sand dune to Eastern Beach, where your guide drives you to Kingfisher Bay Resort for a well-earned sunset drink before the ferry home to Hervey Bay.
